Writing is not everybody's forte, let alone writing grade and score specific comments on students' report cards. But there is no escape from this writing job especially for teachers who have to jog thier brains quite often throughout the academic year in order to write students' report cards.
Factors to Keep in Mind While Commenting
Every student is unique in terms of his or her learning capabilties and academic outlook. This means that you cannot paint the whole picture with the same stroke of your paint brush. your comments must address the students' particular areas of strengths and weaknesses. Here are a few factors to consider before you commit yourself to this writing venture.
- Make sure you have gathered good enough information on each student that you are supposed to write about. This includes your regular observations on students' learning priorities in and outside the classroom.
- Plan regular conversation with students about their capabilities, strengths and weaknesses.
- Note down your agreed-agendas for improvement based on your observations and one-on-one talks.
- Ascertain your faith that students trust you with your comments, both diagnostic and suggestive.
